At Girls Write Now’s Career Day on June 22, 2019, hundreds of high school girls learned about the importance of writing through intimate conversation with mentors and role models across over 20 industries, from publishing, journalism, and advertising, to gaming, finance, digital media, and so much more.
We are indebted to the N-Y Historical Society for their steadfast partnership—for hosting Girls Write Now for three years, and our entire 2019 Spring Series, including this incredible culminating event. We were especially thrilled to engage girls at the N-Y Historical Society’s Tech Commons, where they learned HTML and interactive storytelling, cutting-edge skills that are crucial to be competitive on the job market today.
Career Day is a STARS Citywide Girls Initiative, and we were thrilled to be able to acknowledge our fellow partners, Powerplay, Groundswell, Lower East Side Girls Club, Row New York, Sadie Nash Leadership Project, Armory, Girls for Gender Equity, and Figure Skating in Harlem. Together, we serve 5,000 girls annually in every single district of New York City.
Council Member Helen Rosenthal gave an inspiring keynote to the girls about how she personally fought for—and won—funding for girls in the budget process. On the cusp of this year’s budget announcement from the Council, it was an honor to be able to thank her, and all of our champions in the New York City Council, for granting STARS increased funding, from $1.2 to $1.4Million, totaling more than $7M over the course of six consecutive years.
