On Friday, November 20, Mia Mercado hosted It’s Fine To Feel Strange! Writing Humor & Funny Personal Essays!
PROMPT #1: Absurdity in Answers
I like to write satire and conceptual humor pieces by starting with a very boring or serious question and answering it in ways that are absurd, angry, stupid, brutally honest, etc. Write some answers to the question “How are you doing?”
Q: “You’re from the Midwest?! What’s That Like?”
A:“The Midwest is that feeling you get when you drive on a country road between two seemingly endless cornfields and are like, “Huh. Yeah, that’s a lot of corn.’”
PROMPT #2: Absurdity in the Ordinary
A lot of my essays talk about memories of otherwise regular events that, on second glance, felt strange or weird... Write a story about a time where an otherwise ordinary thing felt buckwild to you.
It could be a childhood memory, something that happened to you yesterday, a news story, etc.
