In partnership with Open Road Integrated Media, Girls Write Now celebrated last year’s Remix theme, our intergenerational commitment to mentoring women writers in the digital era. Talented teen writers launch the spring series on March 23 with featured author Alix Kates Shulman, who published a full library of eight titles as e-books on the cusp of her eightieth birthday.

Excerpts

  • Tuhfa Begum, Nothing Normal.
“Nothing normal ever happens to me, but no one believes me. First, let me tell you that it’s always been my dream to see a giant animal (it’s on my bucket list). Giant frog, giant turtle, giant Giant Panda, whatever.” Read more
  • Priscilla Guo & My-Thuan Tran, Hair Cancer, an Unfounded Fear.
“Cooties is an infectious disease, spread through bodily contact with the opposite sex. It was this disease that caused the 1929 Stock Market Crash. Paranoia is infectious. It catches like wildfire. You never know when it will strike you or how.” Read more
  • Bre’Ann Newsome, The Ambition to Exhale.
“They may have seen me trip
    Slip and stumble
    Tear, blink twice
    Curse, heard me mumble
But I promise you they will never see me cry or fall
I have a point to prove
To myself, my competition, their mothers and all.” Read more
  • Emely Paulino, A Poem to New (You).
    “I love you
With all your arrogance and elegance
    Your pride
    Like statues
    Makes me feel small
Left behind like yesterday’s paper.” Read more

Friday Night Salon with Arisa White

GIVE. WRITE. NOW. And Thank you!!

Girls Write Now’s services are more essential than ever before—serving the hardest hit communities—and many of our young women and gender nonconforming youth have themselves become essential workers to help their families. They carry an enormous burden and face devastating loss, slipping further into poverty. To meet the need, we have enriched and extended our programs, leading the historical transition to virtual learning.
