CHAPTERS Reading, June 2015

For our final event in our 2015 CHAPTERS reading series, we invited special guest speaker Quiara Alegría Hudes, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, a Tony nomination for Best Book of a Musical, and a Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical, to join the stage with our talented teen writers at the Rose Auditorium at Cooper Union.

Emcees

  • NISHAT ANJUM was born in Chittagong, Bangladesh, and crossed the ocean to Brooklyn when she was five years old. She joined Girls Write Now as a junior in high school and was a mentee until she graduated. Currently, Nishat is a proud member of the Girls Write Now Youth Board. She is a sophomore at Macaulay Honors College at Brooklyn College, double-majoring in Marketing and English. Her writing genre of choice is spoken word poetry. She has had her work published in ELLE India Magazine, and has read her poetry aloud at Poets House.
  • TEAMARÉ GASTÓN is an 18-year-old girl who believes that being well-rounded and well-educated is essential for success. Living in a predominantly female household, Teamaré has been raised by three generations of feminists — her grandmother, aunt, and mother. Teamaré believes that it’s important to familiarize oneself with the classics in literature, as well as incorporate them into new contemporary stories. Having been published by Girls Write Now three times, Teamaré uses her experiences from growing up in one of the most culturally inclusive cities in the world to tell her story. #foreverinspiring

GIVE. WRITE. NOW. And Thank you!!

Girls Write Now’s services are more essential than ever before—serving the hardest hit communities—and many of our young women and gender nonconforming youth have themselves become essential workers to help their families. They carry an enormous burden and face devastating loss, slipping further into poverty. To meet the need, we have enriched and extended our programs, leading the historical transition to virtual learning.
