CHAPTERS Reading: April 2012

In partnership with Open Road Integrated Media, Girls Write Now celebrated last year’s Remix theme, our intergenerational commitment to mentoring women writers in the digital era.  Talented teen writers headlined the second reading in the CHAPTERS series with featured guest, Deborah Gregory, award-winning author of The Cheetah Girl novel series.

Excerpts

  • Monica Chin & Elaine Stuart-Shah, The Bridge.
“When I open my eyes the side of my head feels warm and a bit wet despite the blistering cold wind pelting me. I don’t remember opening the window. It’s not open. The glass is ragged like those Appalachian Mountains I saw in Mrs. Pinkerton’s history class.” Read more
  • Shannon Daniels, The Great Olive Body.
“Sing to me, Muse, of a place with its own rhythm, because in the city there are far too many honking cars, police sirens, and screeching subway trains to find the right kind of harmony. Muse, I know the sky is cloudy and so is my mind, but wash that away and let me see an eight-year-old girl brushing the hair out of her eyes…” Read more
  • Brianna Marini & Kristen Demaline, The Artist Formerly Known As…
“It was a week after the high school reunion. The old crowd that Charlie had once hung out with, his lacrosse buddies and peers who he had tutored in chemistry, had all been surprised at his journey. From Chief of Staff for a senator from New York to a Starbucks barista.” Read more
  • Amanda Day McCullough, This is My Dwelling.
“Repetition numbs. Or at least, it’s supposed to. But watching the foliage of upstate New York flash past the window of my dad’s battle-worn Toyota, I remember the countless times its tires jostled me over the bumps and potholes of the parkway. It’s the road that always transports me from the blinding lights and blaring horns of Queens Boulevard to that pale blue house mounted atop the steepest hill in Westchester.” Read more

GIVE. WRITE. NOW. And Thank you!!

Girls Write Now’s services are more essential than ever before—serving the hardest hit communities—and many of our young women and gender nonconforming youth have themselves become essential workers to help their families. They carry an enormous burden and face devastating loss, slipping further into poverty. To meet the need, we have enriched and extended our programs, leading the historical transition to virtual learning.
