We’re so proud to announce the next edition in our award-winning anthology series, Ctrl + B: The Girls Write Now 2019 Anthology, available for purchase May 21, 2019 on Amazon and independent bookstores!

The Girls Write Now 2019 class of mentees, and young people the world over, are coming of age in strange times; times when the powers that be are attempting to strip our control over our art, our livelihoods, our homes, and our bodies. But these young writers are bold. In this unique collection, mentees and mentors boldly take control of their own narratives, tackling topics such as inequity, love, belonging, ignorance, power, lineage, beauty, and so much more.

Read excerpts from the anthology here.

The introduction of Ctrl + B is written by Tomi Adeyemi whose highly anticipated second novel, Children of Virtue and Vengeance was published by Macmillan in early March 2019. Phoebe Robinson of HBO’s 2 Dope Queens and author of Everything is Trash But It’s Okay, published by Dutton in October 2018, wrote the foreword to Ctrl +B.

Partnering with Dutton, Feminist Press & Amazon Literary Partnership

Girls Write Now is thrilled to be in partnership with Dutton who produced this year’s anthology. This collection was also made possible thanks to a charitable contribution from Amazon Literary Partnership. Thank you to The Feminist Press and Jisu Kim, their Senior Marketing and Sales Manager and Girls Write Now mentor, for partnering on the e-book for Ctrl + B.

Girls Write Now anthologies have received praise from Gloria Steinem, Roxane Gay, Meg Wolitzer, Elaine Welteroth, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Christina Baker Kline, Emma Straub, Zadie Smith, Melissa Harris-Perry, Emma Cline, Isaac Fitzgerald, Emily St. John Mandel, Janet Mock, and countless others. Says People magazine, “It’s hard not to be inspired.”

The Girls Write Now anthology series has been recognized as the Outstanding Book of the Year in the Independent Publisher Book Awards, and has earned additional honors from the International Book Awards, National Indie Excellence Awards, Next Generation Indie Book Awards, the New York Book Festival, the San Francisco Book Festival, and the Paris Book Festival.

Praise for Ctrl + B

“To lead the world to justice and hope, we must empower a generation of young women to speak with authority and write their truth. Girls Write Now is making that happen—one girl at a time.”—LAURIE HALSE ANDERSON, author of SHOUT

“When I name myself, I become myself. In these pages, girls name themselves, their worlds, their wishes, their pain and their heart’s finest joys. Right here, girls become their true selves.” —MIN JIN LEE, author of Free Food for Millionaires and Pachinko, a National Book Award Finalist

“Without mentors like my mother, my aunt and others, my relationship with the written word would not have crystallized or grown to what it is today. I owe everything to my childhood mentors for introducing me to writing and the arts as both rehabilitation, and a way to seize and exist in my power. Girls Write Now champions writing and mentorship as a path to individual and collective power, and for that I am in awe of their work and mission.”— WAYÉTU MOORE, author of She Would Be King

“It is an astonishing, life-changing thing to come into the knowledge, as a girl, that your mind matters and that your voice is valuable. Girls Write Now is an irreplaceable organization, capturing this alchemy in every piece and every relationship it facilitates and creates.”—JIA TOLENTINO, author of Trick Mirror

“Girls Write Now has become one of the most important organizations for teenage girls in America and a most powerful bridge between what can be imagined to what will be created, and flourish, out of imagination.”— AMBER TAMBLYN, author of Any Man and Era of Ignition

Girls Write Now Stands in Solidarity with the AAPI Community

At Girls Write Now, we are alarmed and deeply disturbed by the recent incidents of violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across the country. As ever, we are committed to challenging systemic racism and xenophobia, and standing in solidarity with our community as we process and heal through art and storytelling.

GIVE. WRITE. NOW. And Thank you!!

Girls Write Now’s services are more essential than ever before—serving the hardest hit communities—and many of our young women and gender nonconforming youth have themselves become essential workers to help their families. They carry an enormous burden and face devastating loss, slipping further into poverty. To meet the need, we have enriched and extended our programs, leading the historical transition to virtual learning.
