“Giving young women the ability to express themselves with clarity and force is an act of great potential social and political power. Girls Write Now harnesses that power.” —Zadie Smith, author of Swing Time, On Beauty and White Teeth

Mentees in our Writing 360 program publish their boundary-pushing written work in our annual award-winning literary journal. Their pieces showcase the stories that surprise us and stretch our understanding of the world and ourselves.

Our anthologies have received praise from Gloria Steinem, Roxane Gay, Meg Wolitzer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Christina Baker Kline, Eve Ensler, Isaac Fitzgerald, Emily St. John Mandel, Janet Mock, and countless others. Says People magazine, “It’s hard not to be inspired.”

The Girls Write Now anthology series has been recognized as Outstanding Book of the Year in the Independent Publisher Book Awards and has earned additional honors from the International Book Awards, National Indie Excellence Awards, Next Generation Indie Book Awards, New York Book Festival, San Francisco Book Festival, and Paris Book Festival. Girls Write Now anthologies have been featured by Teen Vogue, Bustle, People and more.

Bridging Worlds: The 2009 Girls Write Now Anthology

The theme Bridging Worlds was chosen this season because that’s precisely what we do through our one-to-one pair meetings, monthly workshops, and large-scale public readings: dissolve the boundaries between generations and genres; span the divide between emotion and expression; and traverse those conveniently kept and dangerously unexplored places “between blindness and sight,” “rejection and desire,” and “loss and love.”

Life Resources and Events

At Girls Write Now, we work to challenge and change the systemic racism and inequality by breaking down the barriers of race and poverty to elevate the voices of girls and gender nonconforming youth who are too often not heard—or worse, silenced. From mental and emotional wellness to advocating for racial justice, we are here to support you individually and as a community through our robust programming. Check out our calendar to see our current offerings or visit our Life Resources page to support you during this time.

Girls Write Now Stands in Solidarity with the AAPI Community

At Girls Write Now, we are alarmed and deeply disturbed by the recent incidents of violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across the country. As ever, we are committed to challenging systemic racism and xenophobia, and standing in solidarity with our community as we process and heal through art and storytelling.

GIVE. WRITE. NOW. And Thank you!!

Girls Write Now’s services are more essential than ever before—serving the hardest hit communities—and many of our young women and gender nonconforming youth have themselves become essential workers to help their families. They carry an enormous burden and face devastating loss, slipping further into poverty. To meet the need, we have enriched and extended our programs, leading the historical transition to virtual learning.
