Penguin Random House hosted Girls Write Now mentees for a day-long immersion in the publishing world that included creating, editing, and producing a zine. Each girl was matched with a Penguin Random House editor to work on her piece and learn together. Mentees also engaged in a panel discussion with staff about the book business and heard a craft talk from author Ashley Woodfolk. Mentee Grace Han reports on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and what she gained from the talented team at PRH.
Mentor Alum Meg Cassidy continues to bond with her Girls Write Now mentees and they recently came together to share memories, talk about books, and as Meg says “eat way too many enchiladas.” Read how mentorship has turned into a growing friendship that extends beyond their time together at Girls Write Now.
Malala Day celebrates the birth of Pakistani education activist, Malala Yousafzai. New York City’s First Lady, Chirlane McCray, invited Girls Write Now mentees and other young women leaders to attend a celebration of Malala. Tiffani Ren and Rahat Huda share what the day meant to them. “It was an incredible honor to be in the presence of so many women who are active members in their communities and come from similar backgrounds as many Girls Write Now mentees and mentors.”
Brittany Barker a Girls Write Now mentee alum and Posse Foundation scholar, performed her first one woman show this month. Hosted at Theatrelab in New York City, Brittany delivered her series of pieces in BlackGirlThird Space: Standing Upright in the Crooked Room. She first started developing ideas for the show two years ago while attending Dickinson College. In addition to writing and performing, Brittany is now teaching in New York City and working toward her master’s degree.
