For more than 20 years, Girls Write Now has been a leader in arts education as New York’s first and only writing and mentoring organization for girls. We match underserved teen girls and gender nonconforming youth with professional writers and digital media makers as their personal mentors. Our mentees are published in outlets including The New York Times, Newsweek and BuzzFeed, perform at Lincoln Center and the United Nations, and earn hundreds of Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. 100% of Girls Write Now seniors are accepted to college. The organization has been distinguished three times by the White House as one of the nation’s top youth programs and twice by the Nonprofit Excellence Awards as one of New York’s top ten nonprofits. Reaching over 6,000 girls annually in all 51 council districts, Girls Write Now is a founding partner of the New York City Council’s STARS Citywide Girls Initiative.
The Girls Write Now Talent Manager (TM) will approach the life cycle of Girls Write Now talent holistically and cross-departmentally. They will help recruit, engage and cultivate the development of the talented community members in and around Girls Write Now. This position will both strengthen Girls Write Now internally and create a stronger pipeline of talent into the industries that most need the diverse voices of Girls Write Now.
The Talent Manager will be experienced in HR proper, but also understand the nuances of leading both staffers and volunteers down new pathways in and around the Girls Write Now community. In order to maximize our talent, the TM will need to have a strong understanding of how our programs work and how they are inextricably connected to our fundraising strategies.
A strong track record of success in both HR and fundraising or philanthropy required. We expect that the Talent Manager will develop their own talent, with an exciting trajectory of leadership and growth within Girls Write Now.
Reporting directly to the Executive Director and working closely with all departments, the Talent Manager will focus on the following constituents which are intimately inter-related, with a focus first and foremost on staffing and the fellowship program:
From recruitment to professional development and performance review, the TM will monitor, track and manage key areas of HR, including maintaining and integrating an external HR platform with internal systems, working closely with our finance and operations leads. This includes building out Girls Write Now’s successful fellowship program with increased structure, benefits and hires.
- Mentor & Alumnae Engagement
Mentors give their valuable time so generously at Girls Write Now. First and foremost their mentees benefit. But the mentors’ rich experiences and networks can yield so much more to help even more mentees. The TM will thoughtfully mine our mentors for the resources and connections they want to give back as our best ambassadors—e.g. through committee placement, corporate leads, author referrals or new partnership opportunities. This work will include building out our alumnae program to feature, engage and best serve both our mentors and mentees in their next stage of life, be it high school, college, career or beyond.
- Intern & Job Placements
Almost everyone in the Girls Write Now community is looking to network and land at a great place. Whether a mentee alum, a fellow or a mentor at their next stage of life, the TM will facilitate connections between our talent and the industries in need of this talent. The TM will play a key role in our holistic corporate partnership program by helping to place Girls Write Now talent in jobs, internships and mentorships within the industries that most need diverse writers and leaders.
- Girls Write Now Patron Circle
Girls Write Now community members might land on the Girls Write Now patron circle as a donor, a board recruit, a former board member, a mentor or mentee alum, or someone excited to network and build skills. The TM will help manage, cultivate and engage the Circle, taking it to the next level. The Circle can be a pathway to the Board of Directors, and over time, the TM will have opportunities to become involved in Board Affairs work as well.
- Racial Justice Strategic Plan
The TM will be a key voice in Girls Write Now’s Racial Justice Strategic Planning Process with an eye towards attracting and maintaining diverse leaders across all areas of the organization.
For the foreseeable future, this will be a remote position, but we are seeking someone who is based in the New York City area. If you are temporarily out of town due to COVID, that is OK, but the long-term role will transition to full-time in-person work as soon as it is safe.
Successful candidates are strong leaders, skilled writers, clear communicators, analytical thinkers and outside-of-the-box problem solvers. They have well-developed project management skills, are comfortable working collaboratively and iteratively, pivoting when needed, and ultimately getting the job done.
- A college or Masters degree
- A minimum of 3-5 years experience in HR
- A minimum of 3 years experience in philanthropy
- Track record of successfully managing projects, people and information
- Volunteer management experience preferred
- Savvy with databases and complex management systems
- Excitement to support Girls Write Now’s mission, and to grow in the role over time
Girls Write Now Talent Manager is an exempt employee position with competitive salaries and benefit packages. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
