Girls Write Now announces the publication of New Worlds, an anthology of writing by underserved and at-risk emerging teen writers and their personal mentors, women who are seasoned professional writers of all genres. The collection will debut with a launch party at the independent bookstore McNally Jackson on Tuesday, June 25 from 6:30-8:00pm.
Girls Write Now announces its 15th Anniversary CHAPTERS Reading Series on four Fridays this spring. The series showcases a fresh season of original talent from New York’s best teen writers and the professional women writers who mentor them – with keynote speeches from authors Sonia Manzano, Adele Griffin, Gayle Forman, and Marcia Ann Gillespie.
Girls Write Now is one of seven organizations from around the nation invited to participate in a day-long celebration of American poetry and prose at the White House today, where the students will share their own original writing.
This year, Girls Write Now third-year mentee Lashanda Anakwah won a National Gold Medal for her Senior Writing Portfolio, the highest-level award in the Scholastic Awards competition. 60 GWN mentees submitted a total of 111 pieces to the 2012 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in categories including journalism, flash fiction, dramatic script, fantasy, and novel writing, to name a few; 40 of these girls were first-time entrants into the contest.
Girls Write Now (GWN), New York’s first and only writing and mentoring program for high school girls, kicks off its 15th anniversary year. As a pioneering nonprofit in afterschool arts education, GWN combines grassroots community organizing with an adaptive teaching model, matching underserved high school girls with professional women writers as their personal mentors.
“The theme Remix acknowledges that writing is a communal act,” said Girls Write Now’s founder and executive director Maya Nussbaum. “It represents the exchange of ideas and the transformation that occurs within the mentor/mentee relationship that is at the core of Girls Write Now programs.”
