Girls Write Now Live: June 5, 2020

June 5, 2020–6:00 pm-8:00 pm EDT

“My work as a writer and my values as a person were absolutely made better by game-changing teachers and mentors. I’m thrilled to work with Girls Write Now, especially as they stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, and I’m so happy that they work to inspire bravery in young writers, both in their lives and on the page.”

— Kiley Reid, author of Such A Fun Age and Girls Write Now Live Honoree

Our spring series Girls Write Now Live: History in the Making features the diverse voices of today’s young writers! Each episode showcases electrifying original storytelling from teens who are taking their place in history through prose, poetry, video, illustration, and more forms of multimedia work.

We are thrilled to be honoring the evening’s keynote speaker Kiley Reid, author of the New York Times bestseller Such a Fun Age (G.P. Putnam’s Sons), with the Agent of Change Award.

An Arizona native, Kiley Reid is a recent graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she was the recipient of the Truman Capote Fellowship. Her writing has been featured or is forthcoming in the New York Times, Playboy, Ploughshares, December, New South, and Lumina, where her short story was the first-place winner in the 2017 Flash Prose Contest. Her New York Times–bestselling debut novel, Such a Fun Age, is currently in development by Lena Waithe’s Hillman Grad Productions and Sight Unseen Pictures. Kiley lives in Philadelphia.

Christine Ball is Senior Vice President and Publisher for Dutton and Berkley and their imprints within the Penguin division of Penguin Random House where she has been since 2005. Christine is a champion of women’s voices and shepherded through the production of Girls Write Now’s award-winning annual anthology for the last three years. Christine is a 2019 Girls Write Now Agent of Change. She and her team have showcased hundreds of stories from our mentees and we thank her!

Co-emcee Amber Davis is Context & Co.’s Brand Experience Director. An NYC transplant who cut her teeth interning at Vogue before managing events for the likes of Savannah College of Art and Design, Lulu Frost, and NYC x Design. Her love of indie design, art direction and retail strategy led to work with AHAlife, Kaufmann Mercantile and Capsule Show, creating 360-consumer experiences. Off the clock, Amber is an advocate through and through, volunteering with the Lady Project, Girls Write Now, and the Lower Eastside Girls Club.

Co-emcee Tiffany Davis is Context & Co.’s Content Director. Tiff’s spent a decade-plus building brands big and small – from natural beauty gurus and boutique fitness studios, to Fortune 500 companies looking for brilliant tag lines and video concepts. She’s produced lifestyle segments for NBC, Procter & Gamble, and CBS, and produced brand and editorial content for Tribeca Film Festival, DailyCandy.com, NBC, Lou & Grey, Ann Taylor, and more. Tiff’s got a passion for storytelling, dreaming big, and executing beautifully. Tiff and Amber have both prepared our mentees for their performances as Storytelling Coaches this season!

Girls Write Now Live is presented in partnership with the New-York Historical Society. We’d also like to extend our gratitude to Judith Curr of HarperCollins, Christine Ball of Dutton, and Tiffany and Amber Davis of Context & Co for their help with this program.
