Undoing Racism Training with The People’s Institute
February 27 – 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Girls Write Now is sponsoring this “Introduction to Undoing Racism Training” with The People’s Institute for Survival & Beyond for Staff, Board Members, Mentors, and Alum.
In this workshop, participants will experience a humanistic process for laying a foundation to explore how we have been socialized and conditioned to think about race and racism by first analyzing class, power and institutional/individual relationships to and within communities. As power is analyzed concepts will be introduced that play a role in maintaining the current disparate racial outcomes that every system and institution produces. This workshop involves interactive discussion with the full group. One anticipated outcome is that participants will leave with a shared language as it relates to systemic racism, making it easier to build upon this work as an organization. Based on a 40-year grassroots organizing history, these concepts are not only applicable to supporting and creating an equitable organization but transformational on a personal level as well. The Undoing Racism workshop has been used by the NYC Mayors Office and the NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene, among many others. This is a five hour session plus an hour for self-care totaling six hours. Each workshop accommodates 20-22 people and is conducted virtually with adequate breaks.
These are intimate workshops with limited spots and we will prioritize mentors serving on Girls Write Now’s Diversity Committee. You therefore will not receive a Zoom link directly after registering. Based on demand, Girls Write Now will aim to schedule additional workshops.
