Our once entirely-volunteer driven organization is now led by a tireless and highly skilled full-time staff of twelve. Each staff member manages a range of volunteer bodies, staying true to our grassroots history and model.
“…We are all motivated by the powerful notion that we are all working together to invest in the promise of the next generation of leaders.” – Lisa Chai, former GWN Board Treasurer
Our staff, board, and advisory committees come together to foster a community of women writers of all ages. Every member of our community shares a passion for mastering our craft and a deep conviction that our work has the power to enrich the lives of others as well as our own.
GWN works on the basis of intense commitment. Until 2005, we operated as an entirely volunteer-based organization. Through our volunteers’ time and talents, we’ve grown a grassroots movement from the ground up to become the thriving community we are today.
We annually work with more than 200 dedicated volunteers – you could be one of them and make your mark!
Leaders from publishing, finance, law, education and more comprise our all-women Board of Directors. With their heart in the mission, their eyes on the books, and their keen view of the arts education landscape, the Board raises funds, guides organizational direction, and governs policy in accordance with New York State laws.
The Marketing/Publicity Committee is responsible for advising and assisting the Board of Directors and staff in building the brand and increasing visibility through marketing, promotion, and publicity methods in order to meet organizational goals, prioritizing fundraising/development initiatives and stakeholders.
Led by the Board of Directors’ Fundraising Chair, this committee defines annual and long term funding needs, sets performance goals and strategies, and provides tools, resources, and oversight for the Board.
Led by the Board of Directors’ Finance & Audit Chair, this committee assists the Board in its oversight of the organization’s financial assets; recommends approval of an annual operating budget; regularly reviews financial results; and ensures the maintenance of an appropriate capital structure.
The Program Advisory Committee (or the “PAC” as we affectionately call it) is an elite group of volunteers with their fingers on the pulse of our population. Through their expertise, we extend the reach of staff, ensuring high quality and fun across all aspects of the program from recruitment to publication.
Comprised of licensed mental health professionals, this pro bono panel provides guidance and consultation to mentors, mentees, and staff, addressing a wide range of therapeutic needs often revealed through the intense writing process and tight bonds formed at Girls Write Now.
This panel of teachers, financial aid experts, admissions officers, freshman advisors, and high school guidance counselors helps our girls navigate the college application process, making sure they get into the right school, and thrive there.
Youth Board members use their writing talents and unique Girls Write Now experience to provide critical support and feedback in curriculum development, digital media, community building, college prep and more. The Youth Board is a platform for teens to demonstrate leadership skills, sharpen their professional edge, and keep the mentoring community connected.
They write curriculum, keep the books, advise on policy, teach to new communities, and generally sing the Girls Write Now gospel alongside staff and volunteers. They just do it part-time and not always from the office.
Who are our interns? They’re academic superstars, advocates for veganism, writers for news shows, and publishing up-and-comers. What do they do at Girls Write Now? They create, edit, organize, plan, and write. Like the rest of our volunteers, they’re committed and passionate members of our community.
