What we do

“Girls Write Now is one of those extraordinary organizations that truly transforms the lives of the inner-city girls it serves.” —  Kathleen Sweeney, author and GWN volunteer

With fifteen years of experience under our belt, Girls Write Now knows a lot about community-building, mentoring, empowering women, writing, and more. We put that knowledge into action through our programs — highly-structured, yet personalized; challenging, yet rewarding; and designed to provide creative and engaging opportunities for women of all ages.

  • Our flagship mentoring program matches girls with professional women writers and includes portfolios, readings, and publication, supplemented with supports like trainings, college prep and therapy panel.
  • Through our college prep offerings, we help New York City area girls navigate the college admissions process.
  • Our CHAPTERS reading series, held annually in the spring, is open to all and showcases the city’s best teen writers.

We take girls seriously for who they are, as well as who they will become. The relationships we foster tear down stereotypes, building a community of women writers of all ages who work to inspire and support one another with every pair session, every reading, and every workshop.

Mentoring

Mentoring

The one-on-one relationships at the heart of our work quickly turn into a two-way street, where the teachers learn as much as they teach. Mentees and mentors become crit partners, collaborators, and lifelong friends.

Workshops

Workshops

Our monthly workshop series gives mentees a space to take risks with their writing, working side-by-side with their mentors. This is where our community gathers.

Readings

Readings

Mentees take the stage to showcase their writing, alongside noted women writers sharing stories from their craft and work.

Anthologies

Anthologies

In our award-winning annual literary journal, we publish a selection of work from each of our mentees and mentors: the stories that surprise us and stretch our understanding of the world and ourselves.

Digital Media

Digital Media

Mentoring the next generation of women writers also means mentoring them to write in a digital world. We explore new media and technologies, discovering new possibilities for writing in the multimedia age.

College Preparation

College preparation

In one-to-one sessions and immersion workshops, we help girls turn their own stories into successful essays and their college aspirations into reality.

Therapy

Therapy

We want our mentees to bring their whole selves to their writing, to be fully present in their work and mentoring relationships, but we recognize that to do so requires our support.
