In their own words, a collection of girls from the 2004-05 season describe themselves and their expectations for Girls Write Now this year.

Farida Abdul-Wahab

I am fifteen years old and I attend Dewitt Clinton High School. I want to learn how to write screenplays and learn more techniques for playwriting. I would like a mentor that is motivating and can help and guide me in what I write. I am looking forward to becoming a more experienced and creative writer.

Nieves Maria Ferreiras

I have a passion for the performing arts but I am also very business oriented. I hope to understand poetry and write poetry. Poetry has never been something I understood or enjoyed. As a result I want to take the challenge and get what poetry is all about and how to interpret/understand it. I would also like to write songs; I figure that since I love the performing arts and will be a professional singer, that it would be a great and smart idea to write lyrics. It’s a must for me. I want to write and write well.

Fatima Deen

My name is Fatima Deen. I’m twelve years old and was born in Queens. Currently I live in Manhattan. I go to school at Mott Hall II on the Upper West Side. I love to write, read, and draw (well duh! that’s why I’m here!). I used to play tennis, swim, and play basketball, but now I like to rock climb and parasail. I have only been parasailing once when I went to the Turcks and Cacois (which is an island in the Bahamas). It’s near Puerto Rico. Anyway, from this program, I would like to expand my reading and writing languages. I would also like to learn how to spell and identify words that I know and don’t know, and lastly I would LOVE it if I could write better.

Iemi Hernandez-Kim

My name is Lemi Hernandez-Kim and I attend Edward R. Murrow High School. What I want to get out of this program are new friends and new experiences, and better writing skills. My life goal is to be in a career that has to do with art. My goal with this program is to have berter writing skills and to gain more experience. I hope that this program will give me more chances to read out loud publicly.

Tabitha Jenkins

My name is Tabitha Jenkins and I attend the School for International Studies. When first introduced into this program, I really didn’t know what to expect. I hope to gain new friends who share my interest in Creative Writing. I also hope to improve my writing skills, and become more motivated to write when I’m not in school. The young mentees who I’ve met so far seem to have different styles and ideas toward writing. So I hope to gain some of their perspectives, and learn from them. Overall, I hope to walk away from this, and feel satisfied that I’ve collected a lot from it.

Dionne Johnson

My name is Dionne Johnson and I attend Dewitt Clinton High School. I would describe myself as a free spirit who is trying to get in tune with her inner self. I’m on the gymnastics team and I love to draw and most of all I love to write because it’s free expression and I think that is cool. During this year I would like to learn how to do different styles of writing and also learn how to vent my emotions through writing. I would also like to meet new people.

Elizabeth Kilbride

I’m hoping to gain some insight into my writing, to have some help and criticism from my mentor. I’m hoping to meet interesting people, to just learn about writing, people, anything and everything. I’m hoping to maybe gain some knowledge of what specific field of writing I might want to venture into. I’m hoping to get lots and lots of free food! Do we go on trips here? That would be cool too—I think that’s just mentee/mentor. Still cool. I guess learn from others’ writings and experiences as well.

Carol Medina

My name is Carol and I’m a sophomore at Dewitt Clinton High School. I love writing and reading. I find it to be like a getaway, no luxurious nights at a 5-star hotel, but a night in the character’s home, in the character’s heart. And to think that I considered myself a shy, quiet person. But arriving at GWN, there was a whirl of so many similarities. But the best thing is that no matter what you say, you get a smile, a laugh, and even a remembrance of the same thing. I hope to become united with these wonderful people who have proven themselves to be the best of the best.

Elizabeth Perez

Okay, so usually I’m a bit freaked out by kindness (maybe it’s the stereotypical NY-ignorant attitude thing) but as soon as I saw all the admirable faces here at GWN, I knew it was the place to be. I hope this year I am able to write about anything—things usually I would avoid. I would like to hold a strong bond with whichever mentor I receive so that I won’t be afraid to write/express my feelings or ideas. I’m really looking forward to the field trips and Def Poetry Jam. I feel like this is going to be a great year.

Laura Ramirez

My name is Laura Ramirez and I’m a sophomore at Baruch College. (But I’m only nineteen!) I want to be better at writing, which is something everyone wants to get out of the program. I want to learn more about different writing professions so that I could hopefully pick a major. I want to make friends and have fun while learning more.

Haydee Rivas

My name is Haydee Rivas and I attend Baruch College. I really want to better my writing and explore all areas of writing and literature to see if this is what I really want to do with the rest of my life.

Celia Vargas

My name is Celia Vargas and I attend Dewitt Clinton High School. I live in the Bronx, little Italy. I’m a skateboarder, snowboarder and hackysacker. I love writing and reading, ever since I was a little girl. Also, I don’t let many things stop me from doing what I want, and when I want something, I work for it. I hope to get out of this program a new way to expand my writing. Also, mostly, to figure out who I am through my writing, because I just want to see how far I can take my writing gift. I want to be able to express myself and who I am through writing.

Natalia Vargas-Caba

My name is Natalis Vargas-Caba and I attend the Bronx Aerospace Academy High School. What I want to get out of this program is to develop better writing skill, to write better for publication, so that the public may enjoy and beg for more. I also want to learn how to rhyme my poetry. I am not a good rhymer and I want to learn how to rhyme to make my poetry creative and interesting.

Chenshen Wang

My name is Chenshen Wang and I attend Brooklyn International High School. I want to improve my English and writing skills. Meet many friends. Learn some other writing techniques I hadn’t learned before. Find out the goal I want for writing. Also not just writing, but speaking, listening, and a way to write my feelings in words. Because sometimes it’s very hard to change your feeling into words. You can’t find a proper word to describe it.
