Girls Write Now
is a nonprofit volunteer mentoring organization that has been matching
bright, creative teenage girls from New York City’s public
high schools with professional women writers in the community since
1998. Through regular one-on-one mentoring sessions, monthly
genre-based workshops held at Teachers & Writers Collaborative,
and special fieldtrips and events, the program provides a safe and
supportive environment where girls can expand their natural writing
talents, develop independent creative voices, and build confidence in
making healthy choices in school, career, and life.

Laura Ramirez, a
GWN member for three years, has been working for an educational
non-profit organization called the Foundation for Investor
Education,
since she won an internship there two years ago for her essay on the
Stock Market Game. This past July, Laura was also a runner up at
Barcelona Forum 2004's "Let Your Voice Be Heard" essay contest. And,
starting this semester, Laura begins writing for Dollars and
Sense, the literary magazine for Baruch College, where she is
currently enrolled as a sophomore.

"She smiles to
herself—once she becomes a New Yorker, no one from her old
life will even recognize her. It will be like she has dyed her hair or
gained 40 lbs except that it will only be her attitude that has
changed. She is now a super hero—Betty the Enigma swooping
down on Gotham City. Florida can't compete. Betty is taking Manhattan.
Perhaps she will even be the spark for a new artistic movement."

Now, in addition
to holding our monthly genre-based workshops in the T&W Center
for Imaginative Writing, we have a full-time enclosed office for staff,
a computer work station for program volunteers, and a warm and
welcoming meeting point for weekly pair sessions. T&W is one of
the oldest and most innovative writers-in-the-schools programs in the
country. GWN has the complementary mission of bringing students to the
writers. We look forward to a fruitful partnership!
