Workshop

Organized around an annual theme, Girls Write Now's monthly workshops place up to seven writing genres within the context of sub-topics: our October 2010 Fiction workshop, for instance, explored fiction writing within the Fantasy sub-genre.

Each workshop includes a craft talk with a published author. Last season's speakers include Sarah Beth Durst, author of Enchanted Ivy, Annie Choi, author of Happy Birthday or Whatever: Track Suits, Kim Chee, and Other Family Disasters; and Jo Becker, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter for her work at The Washington Post.

As with mentor pairings and our annual reading series, GWN aims to give mentees intimate access to successful writers – women who exemplify and demystify success, while reinforcing the habits, skills and craft that can lead there. To quote one of our mentees: “Real writers exist; they’re not legendary heroes in some faraway place that you can’t get to. It’s possible. This dream is possible.”

Unlike many youth education organizations, GWN creates the content of each new workshop from scratch – and largely through volunteers and mentors. With help from their mentors, girls incorporate each genre into an annual portfolio.

2010-11 workshops included:

Fantasy Fiction

Short Poetry

Investigative Journalism

Childhood Memoir

Screenwriting Adaptation

Wild Card: Sketch Comedy
