Looking Back on Being in Girls Write Now

I cannot believe that I have in been in GWN for a year already. I have learned so much about myself as a writer and a person in this year alone. I joined GWN right at the beginning of a period of a lot of change in my life. I was getting ready to apply to college and graduate from high school and move on to a whole new chapter in my life. At the same time, as a writer, I was at a point where I hardly ever wrote anymore. Everything I wrote just felt like a poor imitation of something I had read before. My mom was the one who told me about Girls Write Now. She had met two mentees from the program who were giving out information about Girls Write Now. She started talking to them about the program and thought it would be perfect for me. I didn’t know what to expect, but I thought I needed to get back into writing so I applied. When I was called for the interview, I was really happy and after the interview I wanted to be in the program even more. I felt afraid because I knew how much I wanted to be a part of GWN, but I wasn’t sure I’d get in. When I got the call that I was accepted, I couldn’t believe it, I was so happy. Since, then I have rediscovered why I had fallen in love with writing in the first place. I remembered how much I loved expressing how I think and feel through my writing. I’m more serious than ever about wanting to become a writer. I have been given the opportunity to experience many different areas of writing some of which I hadn’t really considered before now, like journalism. I’ve also gotten an idea of how difficult the writing field can be to get into and be successful. I know it wont be easy and I wont become an overnight success, but I am more confident in myself now and I think it is thanks to Girls Write Now that I have this confidence. My mentor, Lisa has become my new best friend. She has helped me so much with my writing as well as being a great person to talk to whenever I have a problem. I’d just like to take this time right now to say thank you to everyone at Girls Write Now for helping myself and other mentees past, present and future to find our voices. It’s been a great year. |
