STEPHANIE NOLASCO'S STORY GIRLS WRITE NOW MENTEE, 2001-04
(Right, Stephanie at the Girls Write Now 2003 Annual Spring Reading)
I was 16 years old when my Girls Write Now mentor Sarah accompanied me to my first college interview. My mother was on public assistance and couldn't afford to take me on the trip. The idea of traveling beyond my home in Washington Heights frightened me, so I was happy to have Sarah by my side for one of the most important days of my life.
I am now 23 and a graduate of The New School, where I studied creative non-fiction writing and journalism. As other journalists struggle for jobs, I found work as an editor for an online Latin entertainment site less than a year after graduation. I couldn't have advanced my writing skills and accomplished my dream of working in publishing without Girls Write Now and my mentor Sarah's help.
My experiences at Girls Write Now are why I'm so grateful to donors like you, whose generous contributions made possible my success as a student, writer, and professional.
Girls Write Now needs to raise $20,000 this summer to fund their programs in the fall. That's why I will be making a tax-deductible donation this spring and hope you will join me—by just clicking on the icon below, you can ensure that future girls have all the opportunities I had.
