PLAYWRITING WORKSHOP
A (ONE WOMAN) SHOWSTOPPER!

At this past Saturday's Playwriting Workshop, "Throughout My City," mentors and mentees experimented with improv, explored dramatic structure, and began crafting their own one-woman shows by writing monologues and then bringing other characters into the mix. Special thanks to the Playwriting team: Julie P., Leila C., Jenn B., Kirthana R., Kristin V., Nora J.; to guest authors Petronia Paley and Susan Stein; and to Dramatists Play Service Inc. and Teen Ink magazine. Mentees, check out two upcoming playwriting competitions on the Writing Opps for Teens page!

GIRLS COLLEGE BOUND

At the Playwriting Workshop this past Saturday, NYU's Garrett Renner shared his financial aid expertise with our juniors and seniors. Thank you, Garrett! If you missed the workshop, stop by the office to pick up a copy of the handout. Next up: At the April 10th Journalism Workshop, representatives from Macaulay Honors College at CUNY will provide a special info session just for GWN juniors! This session will be held at 2PM at GWN the day of the workshop, so plan to come early or stay late. And check out our newly updated College Resources page for for help with any stage of the college planning process.

GIRLS WRITE NEXT: CHAPTERS READING MARCH 26 & JOURNALISM WORKSHOP APRIL 10

The next CHAPTERS reading is coming up on Friday, March 26! March readers, have you been practicing? Make sure your piece is under four minutes, and have your title and two-sentence intro ready. Mentee readers should plan to arrive at the Center for Fiction by 4:30PM for a mandatory group rehearsal. If you're not reading, please come out and support your peers! Then, next month, get out your critical-thinking caps for an exploration of the art and craft of op-ed journalism: writing that expresses the opinion of the author, not necessarily of a particular paper or publication. Mentees and mentors will leave the workshop ready to write and submit their own op-ed articles! To provide inspiration and a real-world look at the way women today address crucial issues in the public sphere, The Op-Ed Project's  Catherine Orenstein and Janus Adams will each deliver a craft talk.

PAIR SPOTLIGHT

Naima and Yvonne

At this month's CHAPTERS reading, Mentee Yvonne Ndiaye and Mentor Naima Coster will read complementary pieces: "I Am Not Your Size" & "First Night in New York." Yvonne and Naima together describe their individual work as writing about young women trying to find themselves--in countries that are new to them and in countries they have left behind. Yvonne writes: "She said: I’ll never see my mom again / But I am living with her. / I can’t wait to go back to Senegal / She will hear what I have to say." To hear more, join Yvette and Naima and fellow mentee/mentor readers at our CHAPTERS reading series on Friday, March 26, 6PM at the Center for Fiction!

FOURTEEN SIGNIFICANT OBJECTS... AND COUNTING

Utah Globe

"My granddad's granddad had a box under his bed. If you got to open the box (you had to beg) you would find a little door. The little door had a combination on it that you had to know to get inside the second box, which I did. I had the combination tattooed on my spinemeat when I was four while on a trip to see the circus. The tattoo was free. My granddad's granddad was very powerful and rich...."

Utah Snow Globe (Significant Object 10) and Blake Butler Story

Significant Objects, the online literary project that recruits top creative writers to invent stories about thrift-store doodads, then sells the paired story-and-object on eBay, has donated the proceeds so far from 14 narrative auctions to Girls Write Now, and will continue to donate until the cycle of 50 is complete!

GWN THANKS DOLEN PERKINS-VALDEZ

Wench"My mother spent many hours shopping for the family each week, and she did not mind if I threw a book in the cart. So I grew up reading all kinds of trashy fiction. I devoured the books voraciously, sometimes in a single night. Through them, I developed a love of reading." Read more from acclaimed debut novelist Dolen Perkins-Valdez, author of Wench,as she reflects on books she read in her youth for Maud Newton, CHAPTERS curator and a member of Girls Write Now's Board of Directors.
