Are You a Teen Writer? Be A Mentee!

Girls Write Now is looking for girls who:

• Live in NYC, attend public high schools in any of the five boroughs, and will be in grade 9-12 for the 2010-11 school year. We work primarily with girls from underserved schools and neighborhoods throughout NYC.

• Are native and non-native English speakers who possess high intermediate English writing and speaking skills.

• Are able to make a serious commitment to weekly one-to-one in-person mentoring sessions, monthly group workshops, and special events from September 2010 until June 2011.

• Are passionate about any type of creative writing, including poetry, fiction, journalism, playwriting, memoir, or others.

• Are dedicated to growing as writers and open to new opportunities and new friends, and who want to learn about careers in professional writing!

Our free school-year programming includes:

• One-to-one mentoring relationships between teen girls and professional women writers.

• Monthly, half-day writing workshops, covering a variety of genres (including memoir, poetry, playwriting, and more) and featuring guest speakers who are published authors.

• College-prep support through Girls College Bound, which boasts a 100% college acceptance rate for girls who graduate as seniors from Girls Write Now's program.

• Participation in a widely publicized reading series, starring mentees and mentors reading their original work at a well-known NYC venue!

• A safe and supportive community of women writers, in which girls can explore and improve their writing and take creative risks.

How to Apply:

1. Download and fill out an application (see below).

2. Include one creative-writing or essay-writing sample of any genre and any length (but no longer than five double-spaced pages) — we just want to see what your writing is like!
