GIRLS WRITE NOW is a creative writing and mentoring organization for NYC high school girls. We pair teen girls who have a passion for writing with professional women writers on a one-to-one basis. During the course of a school year, girls and their mentors explore six different genres of creative writing at monthly group writing workshops, present their work at public readings, and publish an original piece in an annual anthology.
 

ARE YOU...

  • A New York City girl who lives and goes to public high school in any of the five boroughs?

  • Going to be in grade 9-12 for the 2011-12 school year?
  • A native or non-native English speaker who possesses high intermediate English writing and speaking skills?
  • Able to make a commitment to weekly in-person mentoring sessions, monthly Saturday workshops, and special events from September 2011 through June 2012?
  • Passionate about writing, including poetry, fiction, journalism, playwriting, memoir, or other genres?
  • Dedicated to growing as a writer, open to new opportunities and friends, and eager to learn about careers in professional writing?

PLEASE NOTE: THE APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR THE 2011-2012 PROGRAM YEAR HAS PASSED. HOWEVER, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION WE WILL REVIEW IT AND PUT YOU ON OUR WAITLIST.

 

OUR FREE SCHOOL-YEAR PROGRAMMING INCLUDES:

  • One-to-one mentoring relationships between teen girls and professional women writers.
  • Monthly, half-day writing workshops with guest speakers who are published authors in all genres.
  • College-prep support – GWN has a 100% college acceptance rate for girls who graduate as seniors from our program.
  • Participation in a widely publicized reading series, starring mentees and mentors reading their original work at a well-known NYC venue!
  • A safe and supportive community of women writers, in which girls can explore and improve their writing and take creative risks.

HOW TO APPLY:

  1. Download and fill out an application (see below).

  2. Include one creative writing sample of any genre (fiction or non-fiction) and any length. We will not be grading your writing, but please choose a piece that best represents your style and voice.

  3. Your application and writing sample can be emailed to  beamentee@girlswritenow.org (if emailing in your application, pages 5 and 6 must be signed and mailed or faxed in), faxed to 212.575.3603, or mailed to:

  4. After we review your application we will invite you to a small group interview.
