**Hope and Despair**
2008-09 Girls Write Now Fiction Workshop

Fiction Workshop 08-09

Hope and despair are the twin pillars of many of the world’s stories, from the Bhagavad Gita to the bible, to the exploits of Harry Potter. At this workshop, Girls Write Now mentees and mentors will learn how to craft hope and despair in their own stories, and how to move their characters between the two. Highlights:

  • Great icebreaker activities
  • Prompts to jump start individual writing and mentoring sessions
  • “Craft Talk: Fiction” featuring Nellie Hermann, author of The Cure for Grief
  • And, as always, a healthy lunch!

Also at this workshop, mentees who are juniors and seniors will have the oportunity to meet one-on-one with a certified guidance counselor for a college counseling session as part of our Girls College Bound program.  GWN thanks Tom Rabbitt for offering his guidance and expertice.

MENTEES AND MENTORS:
**Pair Reading Pieces Submission Deadline**
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 20

Pair reading pieces must be emailed to reading@girlswritenow.org by SATURDAY, DECEMBER 20 at 5 PM. This is a program requirement. No exceptions.

OKAY, WHAT ARE THE GUIDELINES?
Genre:
Your pair piece may be written in any genre.
Collaborative Approach:
It can be written in one of two ways: As a single piece that you and your mentor/mentee write together or as two companion pieces that you and your mentor/mentee write separately.
Length:
It should be a maximum of 4 minutes (including both pieces) when read aloud.
Include in Email:
Mentors must send piece(s) via e-mail to reading@girlswritenow.org with the following information:
1)Mentor/mentee names;
2)Title of the piece(s);
3)Brief (50 word max) introduction telling how your piece came about (see below for samples)

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SUBMISSION?

Selection: Everyone will be selected! The Reading Committee will divide pieces into two categories: half for the Winter Reading in January; half for the Girls Write Now Day reading in March.  We will NOT be judging pieces--we will simply be dividing according to content and tone. Again, everyone will be selected for one of the readings.
Notification: We will not be able to let you know at which event you will be reading until mid January, so you should be prepared to read at either one.
Reading/Performance: When reading, you and your mentor/mentee stand at the microphone and read or perform your piece(s) together.
Rehearsal: Practice the performance techniques you learned from Parker at the December 13th workshop.  There are also tips in your handbook. You should rehearse at home by yourself and at your pair sessions before the reading. There will be a required warm-up one hour before the reading.
Attendance: All mentors & mentees must attend both readings. You will be reading at one and supporting your peers at the other.

WHEN ARE THE READINGS?
The Winter Reading is on SATURDAY, JANUARY 17, 2009, 5-7 PM at the New York Society for Ethical Culture, 64th St @ Central Park West.  Mark your calendars!! Mentors and mentees must arrive no later than 3:30 PM. The Girls Write Now Day Reading is in March 2009--date and location TBA. Mentees and Mentors should invite all family and friends to both readings! This is your chance to share your work and to support the Girls Write Now community.
