Volunteer Opportunities

Okay, so maybe you don’t have time to mentor, but you still want to help support Girls Write Now. Our vibrant literary community is open to passionate writers, students, and leaders like you. Join Girls Write Now as an intern or program volunteer!

Interns:

  • Will gain valuable experience with a fast-growing organization and also enhance his/her career opportunities in the writing profession. The intern will work closely with the program director, assisting with key aspects of enrollment, curriculum, support, communications, and development.

  • Are strong writers with a keen interest in literature, youth education, and/or women's issues.

  • Demonstrate flexibility and initiative to work on projects both independently and as part of a team. Organizational skills and attention to detail and accuracy are imperative. Database proficiency, web design, and content management experience preferred. Some college education required.
  • Can commit from mid-September through June, maintaining 12-16 hours per week (including at least two office days per week plus one full Saturday workshop per month).

We also have an ongoing need for program volunteers in various aspects of our community, including event planning, curriculum, and development.

What you can expect from us:

The opportunity to grow with an exciting non-profit community, network with a wide range of professional female writers, and gain hands-on teaching experience with urban youth. We are a lean, hard-working, enthusiastic, and supportive group. You can expect training and support, as well as frequent and compassionate communication from our leadership to ensure that your volunteer experience with Girls Write Now is truly rewarding.

How to apply:

  1. Download (see below) and fill out the Intern or Program Volunteer application depending on your interests.

  2. Return the application, along with a copy of your resume and expository writing sample (no more then 8 pages)* to jessica@girlswritenow.org
  3. Qualified applicants will be called in for an interview.

  4. Once accepted, we will invite you to our Orientation & Training, where you’ll get the tools and information you need to make sure your volunteer experience is a rewarding one.

*If you’re a graphic or web designer, all we’ll need is a sample of your design work. Writing samples can be any length and any genre. They do not need to be published creative writing -- feel free to send samples of your business writing (such as press releases or reports) or even personal journal entries.
